Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that replace your natural tooth roots if you have missing teeth. They’re surgically placed into your jaw through your tooth socket to hold your replacement teeth in place, just like your natural tooth roots.

Implants secure your replacement teeth so they look, feel, and function exactly like your natural teeth. They eliminate any discomfort you may feel with dentures or a dental bridge alone.

Nunn Family Dentistry restores both single and multi implants once you’ve healed from dental implant surgery.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants provide stability and security for your replacement teeth. Some of the benefits of dental implants are:

Appearance

Because dental implants hold your replacement teeth in place, they look natural and blend in with the rest of your smile.

Comfort

Removable dentures sit directly on top of your gums, which can lead to sores and irritation. Dental implants provide a protective barrier that deliver extra support and comfort.

Convenience

Dental implants bond to your jaw, so they’re fixed to your mouth. You don’t need to take them out and clean them like you would with removable dentures. To care for implants, simply brush and floss as normal.

Function

Implants function exactly like your natural teeth. If missing teeth or poor-fitting dentures negatively impact your speech or ability to chew, dental implants can restore these functions.

Time

Both bridges and dentures require replacement after 5-10 years. With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime.

What is the dental implants process like?

Dental implants can take several months to plan and place. Nunn Family Dentistry doesn’t place implants, but instead restores them.

The process involves a series of X-rays and imaging tests to create your personalized plan. These tests can also tell your dentist if you have enough healthy bone in your jaw to support implants.

Some people don’t have enough existing bone in their jaw before surgery. If necessary, a bone graft procedure can restore the bone in your jaw prior to surgery.

During implant surgery, your oral surgeon administers anesthesia to ensure you remain comfortable. They then make small incisions in your gums to surgically place your implants.

It takes around 6-12 weeks to fully heal from implant surgery. Once your inflammation subsides, Nunn Family Dentistry takes impressions of your mouth to create your custom replacement teeth. Some popular options include dental crowns, bridges, and dentures.
